A group of high school students boldly strives to reconnect with poetry and life through their newly founded Dead Poets Society. This heartbreaking, inspiring film is adapted from the original play by Peter De Vries. It stars Robin Williams at his finest as inspirational teacher John Keating. He's a brilliant wordsmith, able to make even the most mundane phrase into an art form. Despite promising that all lives are significant, he doesn't mean that they're any less important than anyone else's - he just means that they're very different than what the world thinks poetry should be about. That's why he wants to teach his students how to think outside of the box and become poets in their own right.. He's not the teacher you'd expect, though. He's got one thing in mind: he wants to shock them out of their apathy. Using that formula, the students will be forced to constantly think about their schoolwork and what they're doing with their lives, specifically how they can contribute to society beyond just being cliches... The movie also features breakout star River Phoenix who has well-deserved praise for his performance as student Peter Kesey. The remastered video release, published by Fox Lorber Inc., was released on September 30, 1999 on VHS and DVD. The DVD release includes commentary by director Peter Weir, writers Tom Schulman and Steven Haft, cinematographer Thomas Del Ruth, makeup artist Bari Dreiband-Isaacs, production designer James D. Bissell Jr., editor David Rosenbloom and composer Elliot Goldenthal. Highlights of the film include "An Evening with the Writers", an alternate opening in which John Keating is killed in Vietnam. Richard Roeper of the "Chicago Sun-Times" gave the film three out of four stars, calling it "a terrific movie" with "first-rate performances."
